Tenants on Boards: A Webinar with Glasgow Housing

Join us for a special webinar event looking at Tenant Board Members on March 16th at 2:30 pm.

Our guest speakers are Maureen Dowden and Bernadette Hewitt who will be talking to us about their experiences of supporting tenants to become board members and being a tenant board member, respectively.

We’ll hear about:

• The lived experience of becoming a tenant board member and what it takes to be a good one!
• Why including tenants on your board is an important check and balance for your organisation
• The responsibilities and accountability involved for both the housing association and the tenant board members
• Advice for housing associations who would like to include tenants on their board
• The benefits of getting involved for tenants

About the Speakers 

Bernadette joined the Board of Glasgow Housing Association in 2014 and was appointed Chair in 2016. She previously chaired GHA’s North East Area Committee and is a Board member of the Barmulloch Community Development Company, where she has developed a strong understanding of the public funding system. Bernadette is also a member of the Board of Wheatley Housing Group, Transforming Communities: Glasgow, Wheatley Solutions and Wheatley Enterprises.

Bernadette will be talking about her own experience of becoming a tenant board member, the support she received to make it possible for her, and how it has benefitted her personally since becoming involved.

Maureen has worked in housing for more than 35 years after a career that started in local government and went on to include senior positions at Glasgow Housing Association and Wheatley Group before retiring in early 2018. She has particular expertise in corporate governance in regulated environments and community empowerment and engagement. An experienced Non-Executive, Maureen is the Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership, Vice Chair of Thenue Housing and has previously held roles on the Boards of Quality Scotland Foundation, Loretto Housing and Supporting Communities Northern Ireland. Maureen joined the Wheatley Group Board on 12 May 2020.

Maureen worked closely with Bernadette to support her to become a member of the GHA board and will share her methods for making sure tenants are well prepared to take on this role.
